- Notice biographique
- Anna Wong’s first formal art study was Chinese brushwork painting in Hong Kong from 1957-1958. She later attended the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University of Art and Design) in 1967, where she completed a degree in printmaking. She received an Emily Carr Scholarship and chose to attend the Pratt Graphic Art Center in New York, and on graduating was invited to teach at the Pratt School. She returned to Vancouver to work in her studio every summer, returning permanently when the Pratt School closed in 1984. Throughout her practice she used various approaches, from realistic to abstract, and while in New York was influenced by the collage work of Rauschenberg among others. She continued to explore Chinese culture, visiting mainland China regularly when it opened in 1978 and using imagery of China in her multilayered collage works. In addition to printmaking, Wong later silkscreened large-format quilts which she had produced by Amish quilt makers. In addition to a few solo exhibitions in the late 1970s, Wong was invited to participate in numerous international biennale print shows in the 1980s, including a traveling exhibition of Canadian prints. Additionally, she was invited to show her work at the National Art Gallery of China in 1980. Posthumously, her work was included in a group exhibition at the Burnaby Art Gallery in 2017, and in 2018 the gallery held a retrospective of her work.
