- Gladys Johnston (née Foster) was known primarily for her vibrantly colorful landscape paintings representing the local geography of British Columbia. A self-taught painter, the only formal classes she took were at the University of Saskatchewan in 1925. She painted and also wrote to supplement the family income. Her works have been exhibited at many galleries in western Canada, including the Calgary Glenbow Museum (1988), the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Stride Art Gallery (2007). She authored a number of books on local and family history as well as travel stories covering Scotland, England, Germany, and Japan.
