Notice biographique
Marion Lewis lived in Hamilton, Ontario on arriving in Canada in 1920 from Poland. She studied at Central Technical School (Toronto) under Elizabeth Wynn Wood and Mrs. Peter Haworth. In 1957 Lewis and four other women established one of the first co-operative studios in Toronto known as Five Potters; they were active in the 1960s and 1970s. She was recognized for the sculptural quality of her work and groupings of figures. Lewis collaborated on a mural for the Peel County Court House in Brampton, Ontario as well as other commissions in Ontario. She often exhibited in the annual Canadian Guild of Potters shows in Toronto or Montreal, as well as various exhibitions in the United States and Canada. In 1962, she and the other members of Five Potters were accepted for the Prague Ceramique International exhibition, where Lewis won a gold medal for sculpted stoneware. She also won awards at the Canadian Ceramics 65 and 67 exhibitions. Her work is held in the Musee nationale des beaux arts du Quebec.
