Notice biographique
Before moving to Canada, where she settled in London, Ontario, textile artist Guerite Fera Steinbacher had studied humanities and arts at the University of Amsterdam. Her sculptural hangings incorporated natural fibers and various unusual materials and were also noted for their colors resembling those of the abstract expressionists. In 1968 she opened Studio One with a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts/Conseil des Arts du Canada and also taught workshops at the Elliot Lake Centre for Continuing Education. Steinbacher participated in group exhibitions throughout Canada, principally in Ontario and Quebec (Expo 67); her work was included in the 1968 Vancouver Art Gallery group exhibition "Directions '68." In 1972 one of her works was among the first textile works to be acquired by the Canadian Art Bank. Her work was also included in various exhibitions In Europe, including the fourth International Biennial of Tapestry in Lausanne, Switzerland (1969), and the 1982 opening of the Barbican Centre, London, England exhibition "Canada Mikrokosma: Contemporary Canadian Tapestry," a group show organized by the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in conjunction with External Affairs Canada.
