Notice biographique
In 1912 painter Edythe Hembroff moved with her family to Victoria, B.C. where she attended art courses at the Island Arts and Crafts Club with Margaret Kitto. She pursued further art studies at the California School of Fine Arts and the California School of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco, and later the Ecole des Beaux-Arts as well as the Academie Andre Lhote in Paris. After travelling through Europe, she returned to Victoria in 1930 where she met Emily Carr who became a lifelong friend. They shared similar art training having studied at the same schools in England, France and California. They also went on sketching trips together. Hembroff exhibited her work at the Island Arts and Crafts Society in 1930 and again in 1932 when one of her paintings was included in "The Modern Room," a space designated for work by Emily Carr and a few other modern painters. Hembroff also exhibited with the B.C. Society of Fine Arts and the Annual Exhibition of Northwest Artists in Seattle throughout the 1930s. In 1974 she was appointed by the B.C. government as a special consultant on Emily Carr for the B.C. Provincial Archives where she organized a partial re-creation of the 1932 Modern Room exhibition in the Emily Carr Gallery in 1981. During the Second World War, she moved to Ottawa with her husband and worked for the federal government civil service and gave up painting. Hembroff-Scheicher's work is held in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the University of Victoria Legacy Art Gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery and B.C. Archives.
