Lilias Torrance Newton studied at the Art Association of Montreal with William Brymner around 1914, and while there she won two scholarships. Following the First World War, she studied in London with the Russian artist Alfred Wolmark and in 1923 she went to Paris and there studied with Alexandre Jacovleff, also a Russian artist. She exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1923 and received honorable mention. She also received honorable mention at the 1925 Panama Pacific Exhibition. She was elected Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1923, and became a full Academician in 1937, only the third woman to achieve this status. In 1933 she was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters. She was a member of the Beaver Hall Group of Painters (1920). In 1934-36 and then in 1938-40, she taught with William Holgate at the Art Association of Montreal school. She was best known as one of Canada's most prolific portraitists, and she was the first Canadian commissioned to paint a portrait of a reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth. Her work is represented in the National Gallery of Canada, the Edmonton Museum, the Calgary Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Hart House, the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, the Musée du Quebec, the War Museum in Ottawa, and elsewhere.
