Biography synopsis
Marion Greenstone graduated from Brooklyn College with a BA in 1976 and earned her MA from Columbia University in 1947. Greenstone continued studies, enrolling in evening painting classes at the Art Students’ League, New York and later at the Cummington School of Art Summer School, Massachusetts, where she won a scholarship. In 1954 Greenstone attended the Cooper Union School of Art where she was granted the Wittenborn Prize for Academic Excellence. That same year she was awarded a United States Fulbright Grant to Italy which was renewed the following year. In 1957 she accompanied her husband who began a job in London, Ontario and was elected a member of the Ontario Society of Artists in 1960. Greenstone exhibited her work in the Annual Spring Exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1960, where she was awarded the Jessie Dow Prize for painting. The following year she won the Baxter Foundation Award in Toronto. The influences of Cézanne, Chagall, Kandinsky, and Rothko, can be seen in Greenstone's non-objective works, which often draw inspiration from the land. During her time in Canada, Greenstone held a number of solo exhibitions in commercial galleries throughout Toronto.
