Biography synopsis
"Carrie" Hillyard, known for her portraits and landscape paintings, flourished from 1895-1940. She studied in Toronto under William Cruickshank at the Ontario College of Art and under George Reid at the Ontario Society of Artists school, as well as at the summer school in Onteora N.Y. where Reid taught in the Catskills. She probably studied with William Chase in Long Island as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where she may have studied under Cecilia Beaux as well. From 1899-1902 she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Art where she won second prize for perspective drawing in 1899-1900 as well as an Honorable Mention for Travel Award in 1901-1902. Hillyard frequently exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists between 1893-1922 and the Royal Canadian Artists between 1895-1915. Her work was also exhibited at the Chicago 1908 Exhibition and St. Louis in 1897 and 1901. In 2019 her work was included in the show "Toronto through eyes of Women Artists" (2019); her work from 1901 depicted a bright impressionistic beach scene. An exhibition devoted to her work is being held at the Helson Gallery in Georgetown Ontario.
