Biography synopsis
A celebrated portrait painter and printmaker, Dorothy Stevens left Toronto in 1904 to study at the Slade School of Art, London, and the Académie Colarossi and Académie de la Grande Chaumière, both in Paris. Upon her return to Canada in1911, she began a successful career, garnering excellent exhibition reviews, receiving many commissions for portraits, and winning numerous awards, including a Silver medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in San Francisco for her etchings. In 1919, Stevens solicited a commission from the Canadian War Memorials Fund to produce a series of etchings documenting the home front activities of the Toronto shipbuilding yards and the munitions workers at the British Forgings plant. After the end of the war, Stevens won a traveling scholarship to continue studying art in Europe. She journeyed to Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, and Brussels in order to sketch the cathedrals of those cities. During the Second World War, Stevens raised money for the war effort by organizing dances for soldiers at the Toronto Heliconian Club. She was a member of many associations, including the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Ontario Society of Artists, the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and the Royal Canadian Academy. Many of her works can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
