Born
Napanee, Ontario, 1898
Died
Toronto, Ontario, 1994
Biography synopsis
Kathleen Frances Pepper (née Daly) studied at the Ontario College of Art (1920-24); the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris (1924-25); wood engraving with René Pottier in Paris; and at the Parsons School of Design, New York (1926). In 1924 she began taking annual trips to France and Italy. She married artist George Pepper in 1929 and the couple traveled and painted extensively. They lived in the Studio Building in Toronto (1934-1951). Daly made several trips to Newfoundland and Labrador to paint images of Native Canadians. She exhibited at Hart House (1935); at the British Empire Exhibition (1936); in the exhibition "A Century of Canadian Art" (1938); at the Tate Gallery, London (1938); often with the Royal Canadian Academy and the Ontario Society of Artists, and she was a member of both (ARCA 1937; RCA 1961; OSA 1936). She was also a member of the Canadian Group of Painters (1934). She often held joint shows with her husband and a retrospective exhibition of their work was held at the McMichael Gallery (1999). Daly did the illustrations for Marius Barbeau’s "Kingdom of the Saguenay," and in 1966 she published a book about James Wilson Morrice. In his book "Canadian Art," Graham McInnes placed her among Canada’s outstanding artists. When Daly died her will was specific: she left over 2200 works of art, all paintings of hers and her husband’s, to publicly accessed collections. The Galerie in Baie St. Paul was first on the list, next was the McMichael Gallery and third was Havergal College (her alma mater from 1919.) Many others followed, but any gallery that had public access qualified; unfortunately, not long after acquiring works from the estate, some galleries then turned around and sold them at auction. This was, unfortunately, precisely what Daly did not want.
