- Biography synopsis
- Best known for her paintings of flowers, Clara Hagarty studied both in North America and abroad: with Sydney Strickland Tully and E. Wyly Grier in Toronto, summers at the William Chase School in Long Island, NJ, under Merson, Castelucho and Caro-Delvaille in Paris and also in Holland, where she focused on improving her interiors. Upon her return to Canada in the late 1890s, she was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists (1899) and the Royal Canadian Academy (1904). At this time, portraits and interiors were her typical subjects. During the First World War, she traveled to London, England, where she worked for the Red Cross and endured many privations, including frequent air raids and semi-starvation, an experience which, it has been argued, greatly strengthened her character and her work. After the war, she became a record keeper for the Art Gallery of Toronto where she worked until 1928. She also began making her first flower studies and pastels, which were warmly received by many local critics. In Toronto, she exhibited frequently at Eaton's and at the Mellors Galleries in 1937; some of her portraits were also shown at the Pan American Exposition in 1901 and at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904. Although Toronto remained her home, she frequently traveled to Europe, often sending work home for the annual Royal Canadian Academy and Ontario Society of Artists exhibitions.
