Biography synopsis
Alice Nolin produced most of her work in Montreal and was best known for her busts of Alfred Laliberté, M. Édouard Montpetit and Sir William Logan. She was also known for her 1930 bronze medallion at the tomb of the famous politician Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine which is still located in Côtes des Neiges cemetery, Montreal. Early in her career, she studied painting with William Brymner and later with Charles Maillard, E. Fougerat, and Alfred Laliberté at l'École des beaux-arts in Montreal. At the Monument National, Nolin worked in sculpture under Alfred Laliberté; he was Nolin's most influential teacher as he encouraged her to pursue her talent in sculpture. In 1924, she won the Minister's Prize for sculpture at the first student exhibition given by l'École des beaux-arts. She also exhibited frequently, at the Royal Academy in 1922, 1924 and 1931 and at the Exhibition of the Art Association of Montreal in 1921-1935. She taught c.1936-1946 at l'École des Arts et Métiers au Monument National. Being from a well-to-do family (her father was a dentist), she had the funds to travel frequently throughout Europe. She maintained a studio workshop at 2200 rue St. Denis, Montreal.
