- Biography synopsis
- Rita Daly was born in Montreal to Sarsfield and Jennie Daly. She contracted rheumatic fever as a child which left her with cardiac issues for the remainder of her life. Daly developed an interest in art at an early age while attending Convent Schools. She later attended Quebec Conseil des Arts et Manufactures, followed by seven years study with William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal. Rita Daly participated in both the Art Association of Montreal and the Royal Canadian Academy annual exhibitions. During her life she lived in Montreal, Chicoutimi, Brooklyn, Long Island, and Greenwich, Connecticut. Finally, she built a bungalow in Rawdon, Quebec to be closer to her family. Daly did not sell many paintings, mainly due to her reluctance to part with those works she thought good and an equal reluctance to sell those she did not think were good enough to bear her signature. As a consequence, she did not receive the level of name-recognition achieved by some of her contemporaries such as Prudence Heward and Lilias Torrance. Daly's painting output waned in her later years due to her health, however she did develop an interest in photography when she was in her sixties.
