Biography synopsis
Tobie Steinhouse first studied art in Montreal with Anne Savage, and later in New York at the Art Student's League. For the following ten years she worked in Paris where she studied briefly at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, at La Grande Chaumière and with the painter Arpad Szenes. During this time she exhibited in many important "salons" such as the Salon de l'Automne, the Salon de la Jeune Peinture and the Salon de l'Art Libre. Later she studied etching and engraving at the famous Atelier 17 with William Hayter. Returning to Montreal, she was a founding member of l'Atelier libre de recherches graphiques and of La Guilde Graphique. She became a member of the Canadian Group of Painters and was its last president before it dissolved. In 1972 and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. She taught printmaking at McGill University. In 1967, she was awarded the Jessie Dow Prize for painting. Steinhouse has participated in Print Biennials in England, Chile, Scotland, Venezuela, France, Italy, Switzerland and the USA. Her work is held in private and public collections around the world, including the National Gallery in Ottawa, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Montreal Contemporary Art Museum, Le Musée du Québec, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery among others.
