Biography synopsis
Before emigrating to Canada in 1953, Hilde Schreier studied stage setting and costume design at the Academy for Applied Arts in Vienna. She taught printmaking and sculpture at the Ottawa Municipal Arts Centre and later at the Ottawa School of Art. In the 1970s she began working with fibres and produced hanging tapestries. Schreier participated in many solo and group shows across Canada beginning in the 1970s and was still exhibiting in 1998. In 1974 her work was included in the International Craft Show as part of the World Craft Council meeting in Toronto. In 1981 she produced “From Sea to Sea,” an interpretation in colour and texture of the qualities of the Canadian landscape which was included in the exhibition “Canada Mikrokosma : An Exhibition of Contemporary Canadian Tapestries by Twenty-two Canadian Artists,” organized with the support of the Department of External Affairs as a part of Canada’s official opening of the Barbican Centre for Arts and Conferences in London, England in 1982. Schreier is represented in the collection of Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario and in the City of Ottawa Art Collections.
