Biography synopsis
Marie Agnès Lefort studied at the Conseil des arts (Monument National) in Montreal with Joseph St. Charles, Charles Gill and Edmond Dyonnet where she won, in 1917, the yearly medal for drawing. She also studied portrait painting privately with Joseph St. Charles and she took studio and outdoor classes with J.Y. Johnstone. She traveled in France, Italy and England and in 1923 began to exhibit with the Art Association of Montreal and the Royal Canadian Academy. Her first solo was in 1935 at Eaton’s Art Gallery. She painted many scenes of the Lachine Canal, the Shawinigan area, and the streets of Montreal. Her work was included in “Canadian Art in Brazil" in 1944. Lefort did advertisement copy writing, gave radio talks on the history of art, and taught classes in her own studio. She exhibited at L’art français Gallery in Montreal and she taught at Miss Edgars and Miss Cramps school in Montreal. In 1950 she opened her own art gallery and retired from painting (Agnès Lefort Gallery, now Galérie Godard Lefort).
