- Biography synopsis
- In addition to her painting production, Dorothy Barnhouse was a well-known art critic with the Edmonton Journal beginning in the 1940s. She studied for brief periods at the Vancouver School of Art, the Banff School of Fine Arts, the University of Alberta, and the Institute Allende in Mexico. Barnhouse also taught classes at the Edmonton Art Gallery and the University of Alberta Department of Extension in the 1930s and 40s. Actively engaged in the arts community, she joined the Edmonton Sketch Club and the Edmonton Art Club in 1944 and was also a member of the Alberta Society of Artists. Although she experimented with a range of media, it is her landscape and townscape paintings that were shown in exhibitions in Alberta, Montreal and Winnipeg. Her work is held in the collections of the Alberta Foundation of the Arts, the Edmonton Public School Board, and the University of Alberta, as well as in the Poole Collection.
