Biography synopsis
Frances Norma Loring studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Geneva, Switzerland (1901-1903), with Carl Guttner in Munich (1903), at the Academie Colarossi (1904-06), at the Chicago Art Institute in 1906, and the Art Students League in New York in 1910. It was at the Chicago Art Institute that she met Florence Wyle. She set up a studio in New York between 1909-12 and she settled in Canada in 1913. She was commissioned to depict industrial workers to make records of the First World War. She exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists beginning in 1910. She was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists (1920, resigned, 1933, reinstated, 1948) and the Royal Canadian Academy (Associate, 1920, Academician, 1947). She was a member of the Women's Art Association of Canada (president in 1939) and she was the chief organizer of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the National Arts Council. Along with Emanuel Hahn and Henri Hebert she founded the Sculptors’ Society of Canada in 1928. She completed numerous corporate commissions and war memorials. Her honors included a gold medal from the University of Alberta and an honorary LLD from the University of Toronto in 1955.
