Biography synopsis
Marguerite Fainmel (nee Paquette) studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal during the 1920s, lived in New York City between 1929 to 1931, and attended the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris from 1931 to 1934. In addition to painting, she produced murals of landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and figures using oils, watercolours, pastels, and pen and ink. In 1931 she exhibited at the New Gallery in Montreal before moving to Paris where her work was included at the Salle d'Automne in 1932. She exhibited at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 1938-1942, and in 1943 had a solo show, and exhibited extensively in Montreal galleries. She became a member of the Contemporary Arts Society, showing her work in annual exhibitions in 1943 and 44. She was also a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, founded in 1941. Her work was included in the Riverside Museum Exhibition of Canadian Women Artists in 1947, and In 1949 one of her portrait works was included in an exhibition of Canadian artists in the Canadian consulate in Chile. In 1943 she exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Her work is held in various galleries including the National Gallery of Canada.
