Biography synopsis
Gertrude Fleming moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1905 with her family. After general studies at Mount Royal College in Calgary, she attended Washington State University where she received a B.A. in art. On her return to Calgary she taught art at Mount Royal College, and in 1926 moved to Edmonton, where she became a member of the Edmonton Art Club, Alberta Society of Artists (ASA), and also served as President of the Women's Society of the Edmonton Museum of Art. She was also one of the original members of the Visual Arts Board of Alberta. She returned to Calgary during World War II, where she became Chairman of the Calgary Art Association, and was President of the Calgary group of the ASA in 1948. Fleming was well-known for her floral watercolor paintings some of which were shown in exhibitions including the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, Toronto; the Art Association of Montreal; the Art Gallery of Toronto; Hart House, Toronto; Washington State University; the Manitoba Society of Artists, and the Alberta Society of Artists. A number of her works are held in the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
