Biography synopsis
Janine Leroux Guillaume is recognised as a Master Printer but also worked in other media including painting, collage and sculpture. She studied at the Ecole des beaux-arts du Montreal, and was also invited a number of times to attend residencies at the Atelier Lacouriere in Paris beginning in 1959. Along with with her husband, Pierre Guillaume, who was also a printmaker, she travelled extensively in Europe and the U.S. Leroux-Guillaume was also recognized for her teaching at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and at the Universités du Québec à Montréal and Hull as well as the CEGEP du Vieux Montreal between 1965 and 1969. Although her early work was figurative, she later transitioned to abstraction and surrealism in her representations of nature. She was known for exploring and mastering new techniques in printmaking, including wood engraving as well as the complex technique "maniere noire" (dark matter). She associated with the well-known Automatist artists; however, she never became a member of this or any group. Her work has been exhibited in different parts of Europe and is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec among others. Janine Leroux-Guillaume passed away the day after the opening of a retrospective exhibition of her work.
