Biography synopsis
Born in Eastern Europe, Mary Schneider studied art in Warsaw, Berlin and Paris, winning international awards for her painting. She married Roman Schneider, a professor of applied art in Warsaw, in 1935. The couple was interned in work camps in Siberia during the war, but Schneider drew and sketched throughout her imprisonment. After emigrating to Canada in 1950, she continued to paint and exhibit her work across the country, often at the Pollock Gallery in Toronto. In 1963, the Schneiders established the Schneider School of Fine Arts in Actinolite, Ontario, at which a number of Canadian artists, many hailing from Toronto, Montreal, and other urban centres, spent their art holidays. Highly involved in the Ontario arts scene, she also served as director of the Madoc Art Centre, taught at the Artists' Workshop, was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists and the Colour and Form Society, and founded the Mary Schneider Art Club. For the Canadian centennial celebration, Schneider was commissioned to create a series of prints of famous Canadian scenes. In recognition of her accomplishments, the artist was awarded the Polish Golden Cross of Merit in 1969. Students of the Ontario College of Art and Design continue to benefit from the scholarships she established upon her death, including the Mary Schneider Juried Art and Design Award, and the Roman and Mary Schneider Foundation Scholarship.
