Biography synopsis
After art studies at Mount Allison University, Pat Martin Bates attended the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, and received scholarships for the Institut National Superieur des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp, the Sorbonne in Paris, and the Pratt Graphic Centre. Her printmaking was influenced by mysticism which she explored through studies at the Institute for Cultural Studies in London. Additionally, she studied sacred geometry in music and architecture. In 1962, Bates moved to Victoria, where she was invited to exhibit her prints at the Art Gallery of Victoria. She also began teaching at University of Victoria. Her experimental approach intersected with multi-media; she was the first to use light boxes to illuminate pinpoints of light in the 1960s. In 1971 a retrospective exhibition was held at the gallery of the University of Victoria, in 1985 the Pat Martin Bates Scholarship in Visual Arts was created, and she later received an Honorary Doctorate from the university in 1994. She participated in numerous international print exhibitions including the International Biennale of Prints in Fredrikstad, Norway (1992-2002). In 2008 she was elected a fellow of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts. In 2019, a 50-year survey exhibition titled Inscape Golden Timeless Threads - Points of Starlight Silence was shown at the Victoria Arts Council. Over the years she has received many other distinctive awards in Canada and abroad; they include the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal, the Zachenta medal from Poland, and the International Print Art of Norway Gold Medal, as well as various awards from the Canada Council. Bates has exhibited in China, Chile, Yugoslavia, Poland, Great Britain, Norway, Japan, France, tArgentina, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, among others. Her works are held at the Art Gallery of Victoria, the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art in New York as well as major collections throughout the world.
