Biography synopsis
After moving to Victoria, Louise Ada Loveland, became a member of the Island Arts and Crafts Society soon after her arrival. In addition to exhibiting with the Soceity, she oversaw various exhibition sections including oil paintings, pastels, and black and white sketches. She exhibited with the Island Arts and Crafts Society for a number of years, from at least 1913 to 1941. She focused on depictions of Victoria’s landmarks, streets, and the harbour as well as portraiture of local female artists including Maude Lettice and Gertrude Shaw. Loveland also showed her work in the B.C. Artists annual exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1933 to 1940. In 1932 she was a signatory with other artists to protest and boycott the National Gallery for favoring a few at the expense of the great majority of Canadian artists. She exhibited at the Art Association of Montreal Spring Exhibition in 1921, and in 1947 at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
