- Biography synopsis
- Before moving to Canada in 1921, Hilda Stewart (nee Pocock) was introduced to art at a young age by her artist parents who had studied at the Royal Academy of Art; her mother taught her drawing and painting on ivory. She attended anatomy lectures at the Royal Academy of Art at age 16, studying life drawing under Harry Watson and watercolour under W.T. Wood. In 1910, she produced a miniature that was accepted for the Royal Academy's annual exhibition. From 1908-21 she taught at London's Regent Street Polytechnic Art School and showed her work at several exhibitions before arriving in Saskatchewan in 1921. Hilda Stewart lived in Banff in 1933, painting numerous watercolours of the national parks, but returned to Saskatchewan to teach art at Regina College (University of Saskatchewan) from 1935 to 1936, and then in Saskatoon from 1937 to 1948. She was involved in the founding of the Saskatoon Art Association in 1937 and also taught art and pencil portraiture as a member of the Art Association of Saskatoon (1940-1947) and was also a founding member of the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1941. Stewart exhibited her work in numerous group shows in Saskatchewan as well as Vancouver, Toronto, and London England. Her work is represented in the collections of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors, Engravers (London) as well as the Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon), MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina), Vancouver Art Gallery, and the University of Saskatchewan.
