- Biography synopsis
- Born in Nova Scotia to Irish parents, Elizabeth S. Ladds was a resident of St. John, New Brunswick and of Halifax County, Nova Scotia. Her mother, Hannah Ladds, owned property in both provinces. Like a number of women who were painting in Nova Scotia at the time, Ladds is thought to have attended art classes at Dalhousie College. Chiefly a painter in watercolours, Ladds depicted scenes in the lives of First Nations people (Mi'kmaq) in Nova Scotia. Today, eight of her watercolours can be found in the collection of the Nova Scotia Museum. Ladds is also thought to have painted a watercolour entitled ‘Mahone Bay, N.S.’ which was shown in the exhibition "Three Hundred Years of Canadian Art" at the National Gallery of Canada in 1967.
