- Biography synopsis
- A painter and printmaker, Katherine Day earned a B.A. from Queen's University (1912) whereupon she went into social service work. Day volunteered as a nursing assistant in England during and after World War I (1916-1920). After her return, she studied painting at the Winnipeg School of Art under Franz Johnston (1922-1923) and, six years later, left for Toronto to attend the Ontario College of Art (1929-1930). Shortly after, her studies took her to Europe, where she enrolled at London's Central School of Arts and Crafts and studied in Paris under Nicolas Eckman and Henri Jannot (c.1933-1936). Back in Canada, she became a member of both the Canadian Society of Graphic Artists (1935-1954), and the Canadian Society of Painters, Etchers, and Engravers (1956-1964), frequently including her works in the exhibitions organized by these associations. Her woodcut on Japan paper entitled "Sap's Running" is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.
