- Biography synopsis
- Landscape and animal painter Nora Drummond-Davies was surrounded by the arts as a child. Her father taught at the Bath School of Art and Design and served as an art tutor to the Royal Family, and her grandfather, James Hardy (1801-1879), as well as his son, J. Hardy Jr., painted animals which influenced her subject matter. She produced illustrations, often featuring dogs and country scenes for Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., a British publishing company. After marriage in 1893 to Daniel Davies, she emigrated to Canada where they lived for a time in Banff, Alberta, where she taught at the Banff Public School in the 1920s. She also gave private lessons in painting and illustration to Peter Whyte, founder of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Drummond-Davies was viewed as an eccentric because she lived with numerous dogs and cats. She later lived in British.Columbia where she became a member of the Island Arts and Crafts Society in Victoria and participated in exhibitions. Her works are found in the collection of the New York Public Library, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, as well as the University of Victoria Art collection.
