LE BER, Jeanne

Born
Ville-Marie (Montreal), 1662
Died
Montreal, Quebec (?), 1714
Biography synopsis
Le Ber entered the religious order of the Congregation de Notre-Dame in Montreal at the age of eighteen in 1680, where she lived as a recluse for most of her life. In addition to her religious commitment to prayer, she did needlework for the good of God and charity. Jeanne Le Ber was taught embroidery and other needlecraft with the Ursulines in Quebec City. Her textile work served to aid the poor of Montreal as well as the decoration of the chapel and churches in neighboring parishes. It is difficult to evaluate the quantity of work she completed because of major fires that destroyed the Congregation of Notre Dame between 1768 and 1893. Well-known ethnographer Marius Barbeau was the first to identify the body of decorative religious embroidery she produced which included liturgical vestments, altar pieces and all of the accessories in the church Notre-Dame (Montreal). The museum of the Congregation holds Jeanne Le Ber's embroidery. Her needlework is recognized as a treasure of Quebec cultural heritage. American writer Willa Cather based one of her major characters on the life of Jeanne Le Ber in her novel "The Shadows on the Rock" in 1931.
