- Ingeborg Mohr was born in Innsbruck, Austria on December 8, 1921. At the age of eighteen she was diagnosed with polio and was dissuaded from pursuing a career as a painter. After studying art history, Mohr decided to pursue her artistic aspirations despite this discouragement. She studied at the University of Breslau in Germany, took studio classes at the School of Fine Arts in Linz, and was eventually accepted into the Master Class at the School of Fine Arts in Graz, Austria. In 1954, Mohr immigrated to Canada with her husband Dr. Hans Mohr and children. They lived in Saskatchewan before moving to Toronto. During her Toronto years, Mohr discovered the work of the abstract expressionists, and as a result her style evolved from representational to non-objective painting. Around 1968 she began to work with batik cloth, and her batiks were exhibited at Goethe-House in Toronto (1968), Trent University in Peterborough (1968) and Merton Gallery in Toronto (1971), among others. Her batiks are held in the collections of Trent University, Massey College of the University of Toronto, and several private collections. In 1981 Mohr moved with her husband to Howe Island near Kingston, Ontario. She continued to exhibit, and her work was included in the "Notes on Dark Ground" show (1986) at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre. A member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, Mohr died on 5 January 2004.
