Biography synopsis
Rosemary Cassandra Gilliat was born in England and moved to Sri Lanka, then Ceylon, with her family at a young age. Gilliat taught herself photography and darkroom skills; her photographs were used for book illustrations. After finishing school she moved to London, England and worked for various press agencies until 1940. After the Second World War Gilliat worked as an apprentice to the well-known photojournalist and portrait photographer Bill Brandt, freelanced for the Sunday Observer, and provided illustrations for history and architecture books. In 1952 Gilliat emigrated to Canada where she lived in Ottawa, and later moved to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. In Canada she worked for magazines such as The Beaver and Macleans. In 1960 she traveled to Frobisher Bay and Cape Dorset, taking photographs for the Department of Northern Affairs. In Nova Scotia, Gilliat became known for her nature photography. Library and Archives Canada hold a large collection of her works and her 1958 image of Senator James Gladstone, Canada's first senator from a treaty First Nation, was used on the new Canada 150 $10 bill.
