Biography synopsis
Nunzia Zavi (nee D'Angelo) graduated from Central Technical School (Toronto) in 1930 where she also assisted her mentor Bobs Cogill Haworth in the studios; both women, along with R. Montgomery, were instrumental to the establishment of the Canadian Guild of Potters, as well as promoting Canadian pottery in the U.S. Nunzia Zavi worked actively with the organizers of the Ceramic National Exhibitions organized by the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred, New York, which led to an increased number of Canadians exhibiting in these shows and eventually winning awards. In 1938 she was recognised for her exceptional production while exhibiting in various cities across Canada. She assisted R. Montgomery at the University of Toronto in researching Canadian clays. She worked as a teacher in Toronto and shared a studio with her husband, well-known ceramist and sculptor Jarko Zavi in 1941. They later moved their studio to Couburg, Ontario to pursue their shared enthusiasm for Canadian clays.
