Biography synopsis
In 1952 Maria Gakovic emigrated to Regina, Saskatchewan and only began studying art at the University of Regina when she was in her sixties. She received a Bachelor of Arts (1974), Bachelor of Fine Arts (1976), and Master of Fine Arts (1985). During this time, she studied with Ted Godwin, Arthur McKay, and Jack Sures. In addition to painting in watercolour, oil, as well as acrylic, she worked in clay. Her abstract paintings focused on prairie and garden landscapes. Gakovic exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in Saskatchewan beginning in the 1970s, and some of her work was included in an exhibition at the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Ottawa in 1986. Gakovic's work is found in numerous private collections in Canada, the United States, Japan, and Yugoslavia, as well as the collections of the Moose Jaw Gallery, Saskatchewan Arts Board, the University of Regina, and the Government of Saskatchewan. Gakovic also taught at the MacKenzie Art Gallery and the Regina University Women's Club.
