- Biography synopsis
- Hazel Litzgus, a folk artist who grew up on a farm near Lloydminster, Alberta, began painting scenes from her prairie childhood in 1956. While self-taught for the most part, she had some art training at the Edmonton Art Gallery. Her works were originally created for her young daughter as a way of sharing her memories and knowledge of her youth. Litzgus’ works have been shown across Canada, including at the National Gallery of Canada, and internationally in London, Paris, Brussels, New York, and Tokyo. She has had solo exhibitions at the Glenbow Museum as well as private Calgary galleries, and has been part of travellng group exhibitions organized by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. One of her works was presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the City of Calgary during a royal visit to Alberta. In 2003, Litzgus published a book of illustrations and stories, "Where the Meadowlark Sang: Cherished Scenes from an Artist’s Childhood."
