- Biography synopsis
- Textile artist Whynona Yates emigrated to Canada in 1946, eventually settling in Edmonton, Alberta in 1954. She returned to England to attend the Brighton College of Art and the Royal College of Art and also attended numerous related workshops. She incorporated techniques from throughout the world using a variety of woven and off-loom methods in her work; she also spun, dyed, and created her own materials. Yates taught Arts and Crafts at the University of Alberta Extension Program, for the Government of Alberta as well as giving private workshops. Most of her production included large scale woven wall hangings noted for their colour. She worked on a draw loom which gave her greater freedom to design and create while weaving. She was a member of the Canadian Weaving Guild as well as the Edmonton Weaving Guild. Her work has been shown in exhibitions throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan in Canada as well as in England, Mexico and Japan. Some of her pieces can be found in the collections of the Department of External Affairs in Ottawa, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Faculty Club at the University of Alberta as well as private collections throughout Canada, the United States, and England. Her work was included in the 2022-23 traveling exhibition Prairie Interlace held at the Nickle Gallery in Calgary as well as the Mackenzie Art Museum in Saskatchewan.
