Biography synopsis
Almost twenty years after moving to Edmonton in 1949, Schalkwijk-Barendesen learned to paint and brought together this new pursuit with her scientific interest in botany, more specifically mushrooms. While living in the Netherlands she obtained the equivalent of a Master's of Science in Horticulture from Wageningen University. She contributed to the scientific community by sending specimen descriptions to the Biosystematics Research Centre in Ottawa, and as an experienced mushroom hunter taught courses in field identification at a Nature Centre in Edmonton. Schalkwijk-Barendsen was also an active member of the Edmonton Art Club serving as president in 1981. She later co-founded the Edmonton Mushroom Club in 1987 and also produced a book of specimens incorporating her own illustrations which were documented in the National Mycological Herbarium. Additionally, she published a field guide covering the boreal forest and the northern Rocky Mountains. Some of her exhibitions of paintings have been hung in the Provincial Museum of Alberta in Edmonton, the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, and the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa. In 1990 the Edmonton Art Gallery held a show of her work entitled "A Separate Kingdom: Paintings by Leni Schalkwyk." Her works were also included in the 2021 exhibition "Edmonton Art Club Celebrates 100 years at AGA".
