Biography synopsis
Allamand married artist William Berczy, her painting teacher, in 1785 in Switzerland. In 1787 she studied painting and her husband worked as a copyist and miniaturist in Florence. They moved to London in 1790 where she exhibited two Italian scenes - In an Italian Kitchen - at the Royal Academy. In 1792 the Berczy's led a group of German immigrants to the United States and in 1794-1795, Jeanne-Charlotte Allamand took responsibility for leading them to Markham, Ontario. In 1798 they moved to Montreal where she taught art; Louise-Amélie Panet was one of there well-known students. Some portraits of her are held by the Royal Ontario Museum.
