Biography synopsis
Allamand married artist William Berczy, her painting teacher, in 1785 in Switzerland. In 1787 she studied painting and her husband worked as a copyist and miniaturist in Florence. They moved to London in 1790 where she exhibited two Italian scenes - In an Italian Kitchen - at the Royal Academy. In 1792 the Berczy's led a group of German immigrants to the United States and in 1794-1795, Jeanne-Charlotte Allamand took responsibility for leading them to Markham, Ontario. In 1798 they moved to Montreal where she taught art. Some portraits of her are held by the Royal Ontario Museum.
