Biography synopsis
Elizabeth Styring Nutt attended a private art school in Sheffield and then entered the Sheffield School of Art, where she studied with J.T. Cook, Henry Archer and others. Next she studied at Newlyn with Stanhope Forbes, and then in Paris at the Sorbonne and in Florence with Professor Simi. Returning to Sheffield she taught at the Firshill Branch Evening Art School and wrote columns on art subjects. In 1914 she completed her Masters of Arts at the University of Sheffield, and her thesis on colour was published. She exhibited with the Royal Academy, with the Sheffield Society of Artists and at the Paris Salon. In 1919 she was appointed Principal of the Victoria School of Art and Design in Halifax. In 1925 she changed the name of the school to the Nova Scotia College of Art. She became a member of the Nova Scotia Society of Artists (1922) and an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy (1929). Her work focused on English and Canadian landscapes. She contributed a great deal to the development of Art Education in Nova Scotia. In 1943 she returned to Sheffield, where she died. She is represented in the collections of Dalhousie University, the National Gallery of Canada, and elsewhere.
