Biography synopsis
After surviving the Holocaust, Caroline Dukes studied sculpture in Hungary in 1948 and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest in 1952 before flleeing Hungary and eventually immigrating to Toronto in 1958. She attended the School of Art at the University Manitoba from 1968-1972 to study painting and sculpture. Her large-scale paintings, often focused on memory, evolved from hard-edged to atmospheric approaches over time. Dukes produced her paintings in series beginning in the 1970s with the Interior Series which focused on the human figure followed by the light-filled Landscape Series in the 1980s. During the 1990s she produced the Buildings Series (1991) and Cities Series (1995-1998) which focused on past memories of Budapest, Munich and Jerusalem and often incorporated diverse materials including ripped book pages, sheet music, and broken glass. In 1996 the exhibition “Remember … Relate … Retell” centred on early personal memories where Dukes also incorporated sound. She was actively involved in the Winnipeg art community for over thirty-five years. In addition to her election to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1994, she was a founding member of SITE Gallery, Winnipeg’s first artist-run exhibition space. In 2003, the Manitoba Artists for Women’s Art established the “Caroline Dukes Legacy Fund.” In addition to numerous solo and group exhibitions, a retrospective of her works entitled “Concealed Memories” was held at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 2008. In 2016 her work was included in the exhibition “Being There” at the School of Arts Gallery, and in 2021 “Women Interrupted: An Exploration of the Lives of Selected Women Artists Represented in The University of Winnipeg Art Collection.” Her paintings are held in Canadian and international museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
