Canadian Exhibition Reviews Online Database
SCOPE:
This database is a research tool which provides a searchable digitized collection of exhibition
reviews for major Canadian exhibiting societies published principally in newspapers as well as
in some magazines. Presently, the database includes coverage of the Art Association of Montreal
Spring Exhibitions, the Ontario Society of Artists Annual Exhibitions and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts Annual Exhibition for the years 1873
to 1940. The database covers women and men artists. In addition to the full-text pdf image of
the exhibition review articles, each entry includes a brief bibliographic record.
COVERAGE:
References to review articles have been drawn from the files of Charles C. Hill, Curator of Canadian
Art at the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Archive's Scrapbooks,
and the research files of Dr. Laurier Lacroix. These references have been verified for accuracy.
Research in major Canadian newspapers and relevant art and architecture publications for other
articles from the time period 1873-1940 is ongoing.
COMPLETENESS:
The database currently includes coverage of three major annual exhibitions: Art Association of
Montreal Spring Exhibition, Ontario Society of Artists Annual Exhibition, and the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts. While many articles
have already been included in the database, additional articles for these three annual
exhibitions will be added on an ongoing basis. There are approximately 1,000 review articles
available in the database at this time.
