WYLE, Florence

Naissance
Trenton, Illinois, 1881
Décès
Newmarket, Ontario, 1968
Notice biographique
The first female sculptor to be admitted as a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy (in 1938, though she had been an Associate since 1920), Florence Wyle did not originally plan to become an artist. She began pre-medical studies at the University of Illinois from 1900-03, but then abruptly transferred to the Art Institute of Chicago, where she also taught modeling (1906-09) and received her first major commission (1907). It was there that she met fellow sculptor Frances Loring who was to become her lifelong companion. After completing her studies, she moved to New York for a short time, before settling in Toronto in 1913 to be with Loring. Both women (nicknamed "The Girls") were extremely active in the artistic community, joining a number of associations, hosting events at their studio, and encouraging young women sculptors. Wyle joined the Ontario Society of Artists in 1920, only to withdraw in 1933 when the sculptors opted to form their own group, the Sculptors' Society of Canada; she was later reinstated (1948). Throughout her artistic career, Wyle produced both large memorials and smaller, intimate sculptures; although she never ventured into the abstract, her work is decidedly modern in conception and style. Among other honours, Wyle won a Coronation Medal in 1953.
