Biography synopsis
Perhaps best known as the founder and first president of the Women's Art Association of Canada, Mary Ella Dignam (née Williams) was also a painter, teacher and art promoter. After receiving instruction from Paul Peel in London, Ontario, her art studies took her abroad, first to London and Paris, and later to Italy and Holland. Upon her return to Canada in 1891, she organized and taught in the art department of Moulton College, McMaster University, in Toronto. After retiring from teaching, she devoted her life to painting and art promotion. Dignam was an ardent supporter of women's rights and fought for the recognition of women as serious artists and participants in society. Despite her revolutionary views, the subject matter she chose was quite ordinary, including landscapes, genre scenes and flowers, executed in oil. Dignam was the originator of the proposal for a commemorative dinner service for Lady Aberdeen in 1896, and was a frequent contributor of illustrations to "The Monthly Illustrator." She was a member of several clubs and associations and exhibited with a variety of art societies, including the Art Association of Montreal (1886-1931), the Ontario Society of Artists (1883-1912), the Royal Canadian Academy (1883-1924), and the Toronto Industrial Exhibition (1891-1900). Her work was also shown in one-woman shows across Canada, as well as in New York, London, Paris, Chicago.
